How to Write a Good Technical Industrial Training Report

How to Write a SIWES Report

The SIWES report is a record of all the work you did, projects you handled, and skills you learned during your industrial training.

You should type the report using MS Word, print it, and submit it to your lecturers, supervisors, or department at the end of your training for review, presentation, and grading.

Your report should explain all the work-related activities you took part in at your place of training.

It should be written in a simple way so that anyone, even someone who has never been to the workplace, can easily understand the tasks, projects, and products of the company.

Also, ensure your report is free from grammatical mistakes.

Here are the rules to follow before, during, and after your SIWES report writing:

1. Format

At the end of your industrial training, you will be instructed by your department to write and present a report.

The general format adopted by most schools and students in Nigeria for the report writing using MS Word is:

  • Paper: A4
  • Font: Times New Roman
  • Font Size: 12
  • Line Spacing: Double (2.0)

2. Outline

Before writing and typing your report having known the format to use by your department or school, first outline and write down all your activities, projects, jobs, topics, experiences in a notebook.

Because your department has announced and fixed the date for the report submission and presentation doesn’t mean you should now visit the nearest cybercafé or start using your laptop to type anything to meet up with time.

You have got to take your time in order not to forget to include important details in your report.

Call or go back to your workplace to be provided with the company’s details and information, such as organizational chart, history, and services/products.

You will have to include these in your report.

3. Relevance

Only write down activities, projects, jobs, topics carried out or experiences gained by you at your workplace in your report.

Even if you were sick or had an accident during your industrial training period, don’t include it in your report.

Because you went for a wedding ceremony or funeral doesn’t mean you have to tell your supervisors.

They don’t need and want to know.

Only include your course-related workshops and projects that you participated and were organized by your place of attachment.

4. Use Pre-Written Quality Reports

If you can’t write your report from scratch, try looking for the reports of your senior colleagues or students who might have also carried out their training in the same section in your workplace.

If you did your training in a bakery, get a copy of a report sample that was carried out in a bakery.

5. Neatness, Review, and Corrections

Your report must be neat and concise in presentation.

After writing and printing, keep it in a neat and safe place prior to submission.

Go through your report before submission and oral presentation, because you might be asked questions from your report.
